The company recently announced beta test partnerships with over 40 providers, health systems, and digital health companies and closed a $53 million Series A funding round, valuing the company at $500 million. This investment, led by Premji Invest and General Catalyst, with participation from notable firms like Andreessen Horowitz, underscores the immense potential of Hippocratic AI’s approach to mitigating healthcare staffing shortages and improving patient care.

Shah emphasizes the importance of safety and empathy in designing Hippocratic AI’s large language models (LLMs). The company has conducted extensive testing involving over 1,100 licensed nurses and 130 physicians to ensure medical accuracy and conversational appropriateness. Munjal Shah explains, “To ensure safety, we developed a bottom-up testing process. One of the things we realized was that there’s already a set of people that we trust: our nurses and doctors. What if we got 1,000 nurses to talk to the AI, and we only shipped the AI to patients when they said it was safe?”

In addition to safety, Munjal Shah believes that empathy is a crucial differentiator for Hippocratic AI. Through a partnership with Nvidia, the company is working to reduce the latency of its AI agents’ responses, making them feel more natural and humanlike in conversational interactions. Internal research has shown that even minor improvements in response times can significantly enhance patients’ emotional engagement and comfort levels with the AI, leading to better outcomes.

Munjal Shah envisions AI agents assisting with routine tasks such as reminding patients about pre-procedure preparations or following up on medication adherence. By augmenting these low-risk activities, AI can help close the staffing gap and allow healthcare professionals to focus on more critical aspects of patient care.

While Munjal Shah quickly stresses that AI is not a replacement for physicians or high-risk activities, he believes it can revolutionize patient-facing, low-risk tasks. With over 40 health systems and insurance companies expressing interest in helping ensure the safety and efficacy of Hippocratic AI technology, the potential for empathetic AI to transform healthcare is evident.
